What happened to Superman in the original version of the comic?

1- did he died;how and by who?

2- if he is alive;what happened to the end of the story?|||The golden age (pre-60s) Superman was Kal-L of Earth-2. He looks older than most of the images of Superman you've seen. He wasn't as major of a character as the silver age Superman in comics post 1960s. He died recently in Infinite Crisis #7 when Superboy-Prime killed him. He's now a souless Black Lantern (kinda like an evil ghost with powers).

The silver age Superman was Kal-El of Earth-1 (they both went by Clark Kent, btw). He's most likely the Superman you're used to seeing. In 1992, DC Comics released the Death of Superman in it's Superman comics. In the comics, Superman and Doomsday, who is a ultra strong but pretty boring monster, kill each other (but death is never death in comic books).

Superman's "death" wasn't supposed to last as long as it did, but since his "death" was selling comics, DC extended it and introduced 4 characters who dressed like Superman (3 of which claimed they were Superman in some way).

The end of the story, we find out that Superman has been in a regeneration matrix (in a deep, healing sleep) ever since the fight with Doomsday. It's a total cop out. The real Superman emerges, though he is weaker now and has long hair. Superman was waken up just to find out that a Cyborg Superman (one of the 4 fake Supermen that were introduced earlier) has gone crazy and Superman, along with some of the fake Supermen, fights him and basically kills him for now.

If you think the story sounds stupid, it basically was. The story got a lot of press so it lasted longer than it should. If you want a trimmed down version of it without all the extra Supermen junk, rent the animated move "Superman: Doomsday". The movie is also sometimes on Cartoon Network if you catch it. It's pretty enjoyable since it's short (running time: 78 minutes).

Superman is still alive and as long as DC need money, he'll stay that way. Batman on the other hand.... well, he may or may not be dead right now (aka DC needs money :P)|||he died when he fought doomsday which was the result of cloning ,an infant sent out to survive in the harsh environment of krypton before kryptoninas ruled, where his remains were gathered and re cloned to create a powerful monster by the scientist Bertron.

he survived after it was revealed that kryptonians are like plants and that his pulse slows down to about 1 pulse every 16 days, allowing him to resuscitate, he is but into rest by a krypton preserving machine named eradicator.
