Power Girl makes an appearance in "superman/batman public enemies" while supergirl makes an appearance in "superman/batman apocalypse". I thought they were the same character but these two movies indicate that they are not.|||Supergirl was invented in 1959 as a cousin of Superman who had also survived the destruction of Krypton.
In 1961, in “Flash Comics”, it was established that the super-hero Flash who had existed in the 40s actually existed in another dimension from the current super-hero Flash. Following that, it was established that all the DC superheroes for the 40s existed in this other dimension and there were annual meetings between a revived Justice Society of America from the other dimension, known as Earth-2 and the Justice League of America from what was now known as Earth-1.
Of course, this meant that the Superman of the 40s was also to be distinguished from the current Superman, only being older and being based on Earth-2. In 1976, in “All-Star Comics', a comic devoted to the Earth-2 heroes, the writer introduced an Earth-2 counterpart of Supergirl whom he called Power Girl. So, Power Girl was really invented as the Earth-2 version of Supergirl, just as the Earth-2 Superman was considered to be the Earth-2 version of the Earth-1 Superman.
Then, in 1985, in a special series called “Crises on Infinite Earths'', Supergirl was killed in battle, Earth-1 and Earth-2 were destroyed, and a new Earth was created that was supposed to be a combination of all the various interdimensional Earths with a mixed past. On this new Earth Power Girl still existed. For a while DC claimed she was a prehistoric Atlantean who had been frozen in suspended animation for millenia. Meanwhile Superman was also rebooted by John Byrne and Supergirl apparently no longer existed. Instead John Byrne created a new Supergirl with a completely different origin. Eventually she also vanished from the series, perhaps also retroactively removed from continuity, and another new Supergirl was created, again as Superman’s cousin from Krypton. Meanwhile Power Girl remembered her true origin as the cousin of a duplicate Superman from another dimension.
If this seems to you like a horrible mess, I fully agree.
That said, Supergirl and Power Girl are always distinguished in the comic books and have very different costumes. Supergirl wears costumes obviously derived from that of her cousin and using the same colors, whereas Power Girl wears a white costume with a circular hole over her cleavage. Their powers have changed at various times, but normally they have approximately the same powers as each other and as Superman, save that Power Girl is usually less powerful.
See http://www.google.ca/search?q=supergirl%26amp;… and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Girl .|||One wears a superman lingerie costume, the other has massive boobs barely obscured by her revealing costume.|||One of them have "powers" - super girl
